Apple was placed at No. 11 according to the latest Intellectual Property rankings published on Wednesday for the year 2015. IFI claims that Patent Services issued its annual rankings of the top 50 U.S. patent assignees revealing that Apple remained in 11th place last year. However, the total number of patents awarded to Apple was down 3% from 2,003 in 2014.
On the other hand, Microsoft grabbed the 10th place with 1,956 U.S. patents. IFI also reported that there were 298,407 utility patents awarded in 2015, down less than 1 percent compared to 2014. The reported decrease is really less but it has been marked as the first time downturn in U.S. patent activity since 2007.
IBM again bagged the top position with having 7,355 patents in its bag. Samsung secured the second-place by having 5,072 patents in its hub. Rounding out the rest of the top five patent holders, we have Canon, Qualcomm, Google, Toshiba, Sony, LG Electronics and Intel. These all mentioned manufacturers are surprisingly ahead of Microsoft and Apple. Microsoft was awarded only 1,956 patents and secured 10 position.
Though Apple only managed to grab the 11 position among others, but it’s always great to see innovative patent filings from the company. We are curious to know more about Apple’s latest patent filed to use twin camera system at the back for its upcoming iPhone 7 smartphone. Apple has also reportedly patent for switchless Force Touch keyboard, we are looking forward to it as well.
Samsung has also been seen filing some interesting patents, including a new 3D touch display for Galaxy S7 and a Smart ring that could control many aspects of our day-to-day life. Samsung has also been seen filing a patent for their future watches to control VR and home applications. We are eager to know more about such patents from the leading top 11 companies.
