We were hearing rumors and speculations about the new 4-inch iPhone for quite a long time and that much-awaited moment has finally arrived. Apple has officially launched the 4-inch iPhone SE whose size is inspired from the older iPhone 5s but still packs power equivalent to the iPhone 6s.
As a result, it is quite obvious to compare these three different but quite similar iPhones. So, here is our take on the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 5s.
58.6 x 123.8 x 7.6 mm
4 inches - 1136x640 px
67.1 x 138.3 x 7.1 mm
4.7 inches - 1334x750 px
58.6 x 123.8 x 7.6 mm
4 inches - 1136x640 px
All the three iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 5s come with LED-backlit IPS LCD display panel but differ in the size and resolution. You will get a 4-inch display with 1136x640 pixels resolution on the iPhone SE and iPhone 5s but there is an increased 4.7-inch display with 1334 x 750 pixels resolution on the iPhone 6s. Do remember that despite the change in size and resolution, you will get the same 326ppi pixel density on all the three iPhone models.
In case, you are looking forward to Apple's 3D Touch tech, then your only option is the iPhone 6s as none of the remaining two phones come with it.
Design and Build:
As it is a known fact that Apple got the inspiration to come up with the iPhone SE from the iPhone 5s, so it should not be surprising if both these phones also happen to share the same design language. However, Apple has improved a few things in the newer iPhone like the addition of matte edges. On the other hand, the iPhone 6s has that different design language which Apple introduced with the iPhone 6.
Both the iPhone SE and 5s share exactly the same dimensions at 123.8x58.6x7.6mm but in the terms of weight, the newer iPhone is just 1 gram heavier. As for the iPhone 6s, it measures 138.3x67.1x7.1mm and weighs 143 grams. It is justifiable considering the fact that it is the larger device among the three iPhone models and also has a bigger battery. Also, you will get the Touch ID functionality in all the three iPhone models.
This is the department where the iPhone SE is a great upgrade over the iPhone 5s but as powerful as the iPhone 6s. While the older iPhone 5s is powered by a dual-core A7 chipset, the newer iPhone SE comes with the same dual-core A9 chipset along with M9 motion coprocessor which you find the iPhone 6s. As for the RAM question, you will get 2GB RAM on the iPhone 6s and 1GB on the newer iPhone SE as well as the older iPhone 5s.
As Apple is known for the great software-hardware integration which it offers, I don't see any doubts over the performance of any of these iPhones regardless of the amount of RAM available.
Apple used the exact same rear camera in the iPhone SE which it used in the iPhone 6s. It means you will get a 12MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus, and dual-LED (dual tone) flash. You can also shoot 4k videos on the newer iPhone SE and it supports almost all the camera features of the iPhone 6s. As for the iPhone 5s, it comes with an 8MP shooter and there is no support for 4k video recording.
While you can be assured about amazing photography on the iPhone SE, the same can't be said for taking selfies as there is only 1.2MP front-facing camera with 720p video recording support like the iPhone 5s. On the other hand, the iPhone 6s comes with a 5MP front-facing camera with 1080p video recording support.
Battery and Storage:
Apple has offered different battery power to each of the three iPhone models. You will get a 1642mAh battery with the iPhone SE, 1715mAh with the iPhone 6s, and 1560mAh battery with the iPhone 5s. While the iPhone 6s has a bigger battery, you also need to keep in mind that it also has a larger display and higher resolution. It means it also requires more power as compared to the other two iPhone models.
On the storage front, the iPhone 5s was launched with 16GB/32GB/64GB storage options and the iPhone 6s comes with 16GB/64GB/128GB options. The newly announced iPhone SE has only two options of 16GB and 64GB. So, you better keep your storage requirements in mind before going for any particular model.
With the iPhone SE, you will get the latest iOS 9.3 straight out of the box. As for the iPhone 6s and 5s, these devices come with iOS 9 and iOS 7 respectively but are upgradeable to the latest iOS version. However, you won't be getting the features like Live Photos and hands-free "Hey Siri" with the older iPhone 5s.
As you might have observed by now that the newly launched iPhone SE is similar to the older iPhone 5s only in terms of the size, build, and somewhat design. But things start to change once you start looking at the innards and that's where it comes at par to the bigger iPhone 6s. It clearly means that the iPhone 5s is out of the race unless you are tight on the budget in your hand.
As for choosing in between the iPhone 6s and SE, it comes to the question whether you prefer larger or smaller devices. So, what do you think of the three iPhone models? Which one would you pick and why? Share your thoughts with us using the comments section below.
