Apple announced the much awaited iPhone 8 in a Special Event at Steve Jobs Theater in their new Apple Park campus. Tim Cook stepped forward with iPhone 8 as the final name for the next generation of iPhone.
The design is all new with glass front and back which comes in three colors: Silver, Space Grey, and a new Gold finish. The glass on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is the toughest glass ever used in a smartphone. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus comes with Retina HD display, stereo speakers, a brand new A11 Bionic chip whose name was also released in a leak just a couple of days ago.
A11 bionic has two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores which sum up to 30% more efficient than the A10. The A11 has a more efficient image processing system with faster low light autofocus, new hardware noise reduction. And it is specially designed for handling Augmented Reality tasks.
The new iPhone also comes with an all new 12mp sensor that provides 83 percent more light, and is, of course, more power efficient. For the first time, the regular version of iPhone, iPhone 8 which has one camera will be equipped with OIS. Both the cameras on the iPhone 8 Plus are equipped with 12 MP sensors which improve Portrait Mode significantly. For people who don't get into the weeds of CPUs and GPUs and CoreML, this camera is going to be the thing. There are new features for iPhone 8 Plus like Portrait Lighting which enhance your images with beautiful lighting effects that surpass the qualities of all dual cameras setup in the market today. The camera can also shoot 4K video up to 60fps and 1080p slo-mo up to 240fps.
As anticipated with the glass backs, iPhone 8 and 8 Plus can be charged wirelessly using wireless charging pads from Apple. Phil Schiller highlighted the following during the keynote:
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have new glass and aluminum designs, new Retina HD displays and A11 Bionic — the smartest chip ever in a smartphone. Packed with more advanced cameras with Portrait mode and Portrait Lighting, and the highest quality video capture in a smartphone, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus enable the freedom of wireless charging, all with AR optimization like no phone ever before.
The wireless charging in the new version of iPhone from Apple is unfortunately not "truly wireless" like the Airpods but however, Apple has instead of making a wireless charging pad for just the iPhone has made a charging pad that says "bring iPhone, Airpods or Apple Watch, I can charge it." Of course, that will be sold separately.
iPhone 8 will have the all new iOS 11 out of the box and will be coming at a starting price tag of $699 for 64 GB version and ends at $799 for 256 GB version. There is no 128 GB version for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The pre-orders for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will be starting September 15 and will be available in stores from September 22.
