The all-new Apple Watch Series 3 comes with a number of improvements but the most important improvement is the addition of stand alone LTE connectivity. It means the latest smartwatch from Apple can work independently of the iPhone and you can use it without having to carry the iPhone wherever you go. But if you are someone who travels internationally regularly, there is something you might not appreciate.
As per a Reddit thread, the Apple Watch Series 3 does not feature support for international roaming. It holds true for countries within Europe as well which is quite surprising considering that EU now has the European roaming freedom. The information was shared by a Reddit user learnjava who claimed to have talked with Apple Support regarding the matter.
In the thread, here is what he shared:
- The watch will not support roaming. At all. For Europeans that means your country only, even after the recent (June) law about European roaming freedom.
- There is no way to use a European watch with e.g. a US-carrier. The hardware might support identical bands (but even then way different than what we are used to from iPhones) but the service rep told me that it is not clear when and if at all it will be possible to change countries. Could be a hardware limit.
This is definitely an issue of concern for people living in Europe and thinking of buying the Apple Watch 3. As per the law passed in Europe in June, Europeans can now take any mobile device to any other European country and keep getting same benefits and coverage as their home country without having to pay any extra charge. But with this announcement, it seems like Apple's latest smartwatch will be an exception which can surely ruin the whole experience as soon as a European user will enter some other country.
We will have more to share if Apple comes forward shed more light on the matter.
