Airtel has announced a strategic partnership with Hotstar as a result of which it will be offering selected content from latter's streaming services on its Airtel TV app. It means Airtel TV users will be able to stream selected Hotstar content including movies, shows, and live TV channels directly from the former's app.
It is worth mentioning that the deal mostly focuses on the local content which includes content available in local languages like Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. This deal does not include Star network's English language live TV channels and other premium Hollywood movies and TV shows. Hotstar boasts premium content from the likes of HBO, Disney India, and Showtime which will not be making their way to the Airtel TV app. But still, the deal means Airtel TV now boasts over 350 live TV channels and about 10,000 movies and TV shows.
This new deal is part of Airtel's plan to expand its portfolio of digital entertainment available on Airtel TV. It already has partnerships with Hooq, Sony LIV, and Eros Now for offering their respective contents. Last year, Airtel announced a promotional offer under which it is offering all of the Airtel TV app's catalog for free to all users until June 2018. The latest deal with Hotstar will also be included in this offer which means users will be able to stream Hotstar content for absolutely free.
Ajit Mohan, Hotstar's CEO said,
"Airtel has among the widest consumer footprints in India and with our expansive content library, comprising rich programming that can cater across age groups, geographies and interests, there are natural synergies and we are very excited about this partnership."
Sameer Batra, Wynk's CEO said,
“We are delighted to have Hotstar onboard as a long term partner in our endeavour to build a world-class digital content ecosystem. Their rich content library will add immense value to our content play and add to the user experience."
