When Asus took wraps off original ROG Phone as its first gaming smartphone last year, it was seen as one of the most powerful devices and overloaded with specifications and features. Asus has kept the same philosophy and taken it to the next level with the announcement of the ROG Phone II aka ROG Phone 2.
The Asus ROG Phone 2 sports a 6.59-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED display with HDR10, DCI-P3 color gamut support, and up to 120GHz refresh rate. It is a one of its kind smartphone display in the world as even though Razer Phone 2 can also offer a similar refresh rate, it does so on an LCD display panel. This is not it as it boasts a 240Hz touch sampling rate and 49ms touch latency which is claimed to be even lower than the iPhone XS Max.
It is the world's first smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor featuring overclocked CPU and GPU cores. This is said to result in a 4% CPU performance boost and about 15% graphics performance boost. The processor is paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB UFS 3.0 onboard storage.
Asus has offered actual vents to deal with thermal dissipation achieved by the vapor chamber. It even comes with a special kickstand case called AeroActive Cooler II. This is an improved version of the original offering with last year's ROG Phone. It is said to be more efficient as it can drop the temperature by up to 5º C while being quieter at the same time.
In the camera department, the ROG Phone 2 features a dual rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 primary sensor and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle secondary sensor. It has a standard 13-megapixel selfie shooter for making video calls and clicking selfies. The whole package is powered by a huge 6,000mAh battery (7 hours of continuous PUBG gameplay) with 30W fast charging support. As for the software, Asus is letting users choose whether they want to use stock Android Pie or the custom ROG UI based on Android Pie while setting up the phone.
The ROG Phone 2 has an in-display fingerprint scanner and a design quite similar to the original offering. It means you will get the ROG logo and RGB lighting effects on the back panel. To wrap the up the things, Asus has also announced a bunch of accessories for the smartphone. These include the ROG Kunai Gamepad (like Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons), WiGig wireless display dock, Pro Dock, Mobile Desktop Dock, and TwinView Dock (dock with a secondary display, cooling fan, and a 5000mAh battery) among others.
Asus is yet to reveal ROG Phone 2 availability and pricing details. Both of these things will be made public after the official launch event which is scheduled for tomorrow in China. We will be updating the story with exact details as soon as the event will be over.
