Facebook testing with dedicated news section in US

12 January 2018 3

Social media giant Facebook continues to bring new features and improvements to the platform. Just recently on the account of the new year, the company brought exciting new festive features that everyone got in love with. Facebook is now working on a feature that the platform is in need of desperately which is to somehow end the sharing of fake news on the platform. Facebook users would share news items with eye-catching titles without going through the actual content, which is a matter of concern for the Facebook management.

The project is called Facebook Journalism that aims to bring local news to the users via a separate section which is being tested in various areas of USA like, ‘New Orleans, La.; Little Rock, Ark.; Billings, Mont.; Peoria, Ill.; Olympia, Wash.; and Binghamton, N.Y’.

Users from these areas would be able to see a new section that is named as ‘Today In [city name]’ that would bring together all the local news in a single place. To ensure that these stories and news items are authentic, Facebook would only show up content from hand-picked sources from local publishers that are examined by Facebook’s News Partnership team while the news stories would be picked up utilizing machine-learning technology behind.

Currently, there is no information as to when it would be made available to other areas around the world.
