The notch was never a feature, it was always a compromise. What started off as a minimal notch with the original Essential phone, grew larger both in size and reach with iPhone X and gradually almost every brand adopted the notch in some form or the other except Samsung. However, it seems like now the technology is maturing enough for us to be able to bid goodbye to the notch, forever.
If sources are to be believed, Chinese smartphone maker OPPO which released the near bezel-less Find X sometime back is working on an alternative solution to the notch and for the time being, it’s called Open hole camera. With this technology, the front-facing camera could be placed beneath the display with a small opening for the lens to capture the image, like a small island. This would entail the manufacturers to get rid of the notch and moving other important sensors right above the display making way to the maximum screen estate.
Though we have seen a few patents in the past which talk about the front camera being placed under the display, quite like the in-display fingerprint sensor, this is the first time we are seeing an actual graphic representation of how a device with such a camera may look like!
According to the leakster who goes by the name iceuniverse on Twitter, this device could be launched as OPPO R19 in 2019 and may feature an in- display fingerprint sensor as well. This makes the news further interesting as historically, OnePlus phones have borrowed the design from OPPO’s R series. So probably we are looking at a OnePlus 7 or a OnePlus 7T. Though, only time will tell.
Moving forward we may see devices with display playing a major role in overall design as it may house the in-display fingerprint sensor, produce sound and even house the camera itself, which makes us believe that we are very close to a phone with 100% display.
