Realme 2 Pro vs Realme U1: An in-house competition

The Chinese OEMs are known for having more than one brand under the parent company. Huawei also has a sub-brand Honor to attract buyers who are looking for a budget-friendly smartphone. The latest Kirin 980 powered Honor flagship costs nearly half as opposed to Huawei premium phone. To cater more budget-conscious customers the Chinese OMEs announced new brandings for the Indian market. A few months ago Oppo announced Realme brand for the Indian market. So far under this branding, the company announced four phones and all were quite successful in terms of value for money.

Xiaomi also announced new Poco branding for the Indian market. The new brand is aimed to bring solid flagship phones for the Indian buyers at the affordable price tag. Recently the Oppo owned Realme announced another phone as U1. The U1 is the fourth Realme phone in India. In a surprising move, the U1 is announced pretty soon after the Realme 2 Pro. The new U1 also kicks off new U-lineup under the Realme brand.

The Realme 2 Pro is currently the latest best from Realme whereas the U-lineup phones are especially focused to enhance your capturing experience. That is why U1 is packed with a number of camera-centric features. However, in many aspects, both the phones are almost identical. So if you are looking to grab new Realme phone it won't be an easy task to decide whether you should grab the latest U1 or stick with the Realme 2 Pro. Both the phones have different selling aspects, it will be an interesting battle between the two. Without any further delay, let's find out how both phones stack up against each other.

As both the phones are affordable mid-rangers that's why both have a plastic body instead of metal or glass. The Realme U1 is available in three striking colors including Fiery Gold, Ambitious Black and Brave Blue colors whereas the Realme 2 Pro can be purchased in Ice Lake, Black Sea and Blue Ocean colors.

Despite having the plastic body both the phones comes with stylish design. Following the latest trend, both have waterdrop notch at the top of the display that's why screen-to-body is significantly higher than the regular phones with notch or bezel. The fingerprint scanner on both the phones in on the rear side in the center below the camera's setup.

Both have dual cameras aligned horizontally on the top left corner with LED flashlight. The good thing is both have the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, both the phones have Micro-USB port for connectivity and charging. Both have a bottom firing speaker. The power button is on the right edge whereas the volume controllers are on the left side and also the SIM slot.

The Realme U1 dimensions are 157x74x8mm whereas the Realme 2 Pro is slightly smaller and thicker at 156.7x74.0x8.5mm. In terms of weight, the Realme 2 Pro is slightly heavier at 174g whereas the U1 weighs 168g only.


As far as the display is a concern the Realme U1 features a 6.3-inches display with Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The display screen-to-body ratio is 90.8% whereas the aspect ratio is 19.5:9. The display pixels density is 409 pixels-per-inch. The Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is protecting the display.

The Realme 2 Pro also has 6.3-inches IPS LCD panel with Full HD+ screen resolution. Other specs remain similar to the U1. So no matter which smartphone you opt both have similar size display panel and same technology.


Under the hood, both the phones have the mid-range chipset. The U1 is the first phone in the market with the latest Helio P70 chipset. Its an Octa-core mid-range SoC built on the 12nm process. The chipset max clocking speed is 2.1Ghz. The Mali-G72 is on board as a Graphics processing unit. Another good thing is it comes with a dedicated AI engine to better handle AI tasks. The chipset is accompanied with 4GB RAM.

The Realme 2 Pro has the Qualcomm's Octa-core Snapdragon 660 chipset. This chipset is built on the 14nm process with max clocking at 2.2Ghz. The Adreno 512 is taking care of graphics. It also has an AI engine to perform AI tasks efficiently. The Realme 2 Pro has variants with up to 8GB RAM.

In terms of native storage, the U1 base variant has 32GB storage whereas the top-tier model has 64GB storage. Its native storage is further expandable up to 256GB using MicroSD. The Realme 2 Pro has 64GB and 128GB variants and it supports memory expansion up to 256GB via MicroSD. The Realme 2 Pro doesn't have FM Radio support whereas U1 has FM Radio.

As OS both the phones are pre-installed with the Android 8.1 with ColorOS 5.2. In terms of UI, you won't find any difference between the two except the camera features.

The Realme U1 and Realme 2 Pro both have dual sensors on the rear side. The primary rear snapper on the Realme U1 is 13MP with f/2.2 aperture whereas the secondary sensor is a depth-sensing 2MP module with f/2.4 aperture. Both the sensors are accompanied with single LED flashlight. It comes with AI scene detection feature which allows the phone better adjust camera settings after detecting the scene. For instance, it will opt different color scheme while capturing food as opposed to flowers. The device comes with a Portrait lighting feature and also it can capture super slow-motion videos at 960 frames-per-second.

Up front, the selfie snapper is Sony IMX576 25MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. It features 4-in-1 pixel tech which allows the camera to combine four different pixels into one. Another new goodie is Backlight mode which allows you to keep the subject in focus despite having significant light on the background. Last but not the least it has AI Beauty+ mode which beautifies your shots with AI prowess on the basis of 296 points. Apart from rear fingerprint scanner it also facial recognition as the secondary security option.

The Realme 2 Pro has better camera sensors. The primary module is Sony IMX398 16MP sensor with f/1.7 aperture whereas the secondary module is depth-sensing 2MP. It comes with portrait mode, scene recognition and multi-frame noise reduction. The selfie snapper is 16MP with f/2.0 aperture. The selfie camera features AI Beauty 2.0 to further beautify your selfies. Last but not the least it comes with AR stickers support for both cameras.


The U1 lights are kept on by a 3,500mAh battery cell and it comes with 10W charger. The Realme 2 Pro also has a similar battery module and charger. Both the phones have enough battery juice to last one day on a single charge.


As far as pricing is a concern both the phones are currently available for the Indian market only. The Realme U1 base model with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage costs INR 11,999. The top-tier model has 4GB RAM with 64GB storage at a price tag of INR 14,499. The U1 will be available for purchase from December 5 via Amazon.in.

The Realme 2 Pro is already available. The base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage can be purchased at INR 13,990. The standard variant has 6GB RAM with 64GB storage at a price tag of INR 15,990. The top of the line model with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage can be purchased at INR 17,990. The Realme 2 Pro is exclusively available from Flipkart.


One thing is confirmed despite being mid-rangers both have stylish design language. Now whether you prefer the plastic body or not it's up to you. Both the phones have LCD display panel with Full HD+ screen resolution. In the hardware, both are solid mid-range offering but if you are looking for more options the Realme 2 Pro is a better option.

The Realme 2 Pro takes lead in the performance department whereas the U1 cameras are the better performer. In the software and battery department, both the phones are on the same level. Last but not the least the Realme 2 Pro is slightly more expensive and also it is available in three configurations with up to 8GB RAM. Realme - a brand as such it's absolutely rocking. But still somehow, its cameras aren't as convincing to me as they should be. Not infusing that confidence in this feature.
