While the telcos are gearing up for the commercial launch of the 5G network, the world is eagerly waiting for the first 5G smartphone. That is why Samsung and Verizon have teamed up to launch a 5G phone in the US in the first half of 2019.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 is said to be the first major phone to sport 5G connectivity, however, we will get to see a glimpse of the tech in the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit. Qualcomm is set to announce its 5G capable flagship processor at the summit.
Samsung along with Verizon will also show off a proof of concept device powered by the same Qualcomm SoC and Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem. Though both the companies have not named the Galaxy S10 device in their announcement, however, going by the press release, it is clear that Samsung is not going to release an updated Galaxy S9 or a Note 9 with 5G capabilities, at least for now.
Apart from Samsung, almost all the major manufacturers are gearing up with their respective 5G devices. The upcoming 5G phones will support the high-speed data connectivity which is said to change the mobile computing to an entirety. So for the moment, all the focus is on Maui, Hawaii where Qualcomm is hosting its technology summit.
"5G will usher in a new era of mobile connectivity, allowing people to connect to data, experiences and other in ways never thought possible," said Brian Higgins, Vice President, Wireless Device and Product Marketing at Verizon.
"We're proud to work alongside innovative partners like Verizon and Qualcomm Technologies to deliver a smartphone that will fundamentally transform how people work and play," said Justin Denison, Senior Vice President, Mobile Product Strategy and Marketing at Samsung Electronics America.
