26 March 2019 5

This year battle of affordable flagships will be even stiffer because the big giants like Samsung and Apple launched affordable flagships alongside the premium models. Apple released iPhone XR to attract buyers who like the edge-to-edge design but don't want to spend a hefty amount. The Galaxy S10e is another affordable flagship phone in the market. Apart from these two aforementioned phones, we have two amazing affordable flagship options including OnePlus 6T and Xiaomi Mi 9.

The OnePlus 6T was launched in the last quarter of 2018 but still, it is rated as one of the best phones in its price category. The device maintains the status of flagship killer by offering top-tier hardware at affordable pricing. Ahead of the MWC 2019, the Chinese giant Xiaomi wrapped off the cover from the flagship Mi 9. The addition of Mi 9 will certainly heat up the competition in the affordable flagships market.

The Mi 9 brings all the goodies on board to dethrone OnePlus 6T from the status of best affordable flagship phone in the market. Like the latest premium phones, it comes with under-glass fingerprint scanner, triple rear cameras setup, OLED display and much more. Design

Following the latest trend, both Mi 9 and OnePlus 6T are packed with the glass and metal sandwich design. Both the phones have teardrop notch at the top, however, the finish is different. The 6T comes with slightly large teardrop notch whereas the Mi 9 comes with ultra-thin waterdrop notch. Same is the case with the bottom bezel, the 6T has slightly thicker bezel as opposed to Mi 9.

The Mi 9 and OnePlus 6T glass rear and front is protected with the Corning Gorilla Glass 6. The glass rear on both the phones is gently curved from the edges so that the device can be grabbed single-handed easily. Overall both the phones have a full front-facing display with minimal hindrance. That's where the similarities between the two phones end.

On the rear side, the Mi 9 comes with triple cameras aligned vertically on the top left corner with LED flashlight right below it. The cameras setup is slightly protruding which is inconvenient when the device is put flat. The OnePlus 6T comes with dual rear snappers aligned vertically in the center. Both the devices have the under-glass optical fingerprint scanner.

Both the phones lack the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack instead rely on the Type-C connector. In terms of water and dust resistance, the OnePlus 6T comes with a special coating which provides resistance against water up to some extent but lacks IP-ratings. Apart from the traditional fingerprint scanner, both the phones have 2D facial recognition.

The Mi 9 dimensions are 157.5 x 74.67 x 7.61mm and weigh 173 grams. The OnePlus 6T is almost similar but thicker at 157.5 × 74.8 × 8.2 mm and also heavier at 185g. In terms of color options, the Mi 9 is available in Black, Blue, and Violet whereas the 6T can be grabbed in Midnight Black, Mirror Black, and Thunder Purple. The Mi 9 features dedicated Google button whereas the 6T comes with a dedicated slider button.

Display

Despite being affordable flagships both the phones feature AMOLED display panel. The Mi 9 packs a 6.39-inches display panel with Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The display pixels density is 403 pixels-per-inch.

The OnePlus 6T comes with slightly larger 6.41-inches display with Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The display pixels density is 402 pixels-per-inch. Thanks to Samsun's AMOLED panel both the phones have great colors accuracy, saturation, and deep blacks. The Sunlight and Reading Mode 2.0 was introduced with the Mi 9 which makes it a better phone under direct sunlight.

Hardware

In the hardware department, both the phones are amongst the fastest phones in the market. The Mi 9 is packed with the latest best in the market whereas the OnePlus 6T is running on the best of that time when it was released. The Mi 9 is running on the Qualcomm's latest Octa-core Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Octa-core chipset is accompanied with 6GB RAM with either 64GB or 128GB storage.

The OnePlus 6T is running on the Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 SoC but still, it is powerful enough to compete against Mi 9 in the performance department. The 6T is available in two configurations with either 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage.

Unfortunately both the phones lack support for memory expansion via MicroSD. So you have to choose memory variant wisely. Overall both the phones are ultra fast in handling daily driver tasks and HIFI games. However, the Mi 9 has an advantage of the latest hardware that's why it is more future proof as opposed to OnePlus 6T.

Software

Both the phones are pre-installed with Android Pie straight out of the box, however, the UI skin is different. The Mi 9 comes with MIUI 10 with tons of extra features as opposed to the stock version of Android OS. Although it looks a lot like iOS still it brings a number of features which are treated for MIUI users. The Mi 9 is pre-installed with February security patch.

The OnePlus 6T is running on the Oxygen OS custom skin which is one of thinnest custom ROM available in the market. It retains a number of services and features of the stock version of Android OS, still, it brings few special features and gestures to attract users. The 6T is also on the February security patch at the moment.

In terms of the rolling update, the MIUI fans have to wait longer for the latest update whereas the OnePlus 6T owners are amongst the first to receive the new software updates.

Camera

Despite having dual and triple rear cameras both the phones are not camera-centric flagships instead the OEMs rely on the performance as the key-selling aspect. Still, the latest MI 9 is the best camera phone from Xiaomi so far. Unfortunately, the Mi 9 cameras lack optical image stabilization which will certainly effect capturing capability on the move.

The primary rear snapper on the Mi 9 is a 48MP module with f/1.75 aperture. The secondary sensor is a wide-angle 16MP module with an f/2.2 aperture. Last but not the least you will get a 12MP telephoto sensor with f/2.2 aperture and optical zoom up to 2x. Up front, the selfie snapper is 20MP with f/2.0 aperture and HDR support.

The cameras setup is certainly the weakest aspect of the OnePlus 6T. It packs dual main rear snappers, the primary sensor is 16MP with f/1.7 aperture whereas the secondary sensor is 20MP with f/1.7 aperture. The secondary sensor provides optical zoom up to 2x but it lacks wide-angle sensor. The front-facing selfie snapper on the 6T is 16MP with f/2.0 aperture.

Both the phones capturing capabilities are pretty good in stable lighting condition but in low-light scenarios both the phones struggle. Both the devices have beauty and portrait mode to enhance your capturing experience. The 6T primary sensor has OIS which provides stability while capturing video on the go. Both the phones can record 4K videos at 60 frames per second. The Mi 9 can also record super slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second. As per the DxoMark rating, the Mi 9 achieves 107 points which means it is just one point below the Galaxy S10.

Battery

Usually, most of the phones in the market last one day on a single charge, let's find out how these phones last on a single battery. The Mi 9 lights are kept on by a 3,300mAh battery whereas the OnePlus 6T comes with significantly larger 3,700mAh battery. On average both have enough juice to last one day on single charge.

In terms of fast charging the Mi 9 is shipped with 27W fast charger straight out of the box and supports 20W wireless charging. The 6T comes with the proprietary "Dash Charge" but it lacks support for wireless charging. The Mi 9 is the winner in this section due to power efficient chipset, fast charging and wireless charging support.

Price

As far as the pricing is a concern the Mi 9 base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage costs 449 Euros whereas the 128GB models are slightly expensive at 559 Euros. The OnePlus 6T with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage costs 549 Euros whereas the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage are slightly expensive at 638 Euros.

Conclusion:

Despite having a number of other goodies both the phones are performance centric flagships. Both are packed with solid hardware with a number of RAM and storage options. No matter which smartphone you opt both are ultra fast and strong performers. Both have different Pros and Cons, the Mi 9 is packed with stylish glass and metal sandwich design, solid AMOLED display, solid performing hardware, one of the best cameras, one-day battery life with ultra fast and wireless charging. Above all a reasonable pricing to lure buyers.

Despite being around six months old the 6T is still one of the fastest powerful phones in the market. It brings glass and metal clad design, solid AMOLED display, near stock UI, one-day battery life and affordable price tag. Multiple variants actually offer more options to choose from. That's what the upside of both phones is. The "non-expandable" thing being the only downside.
