LG files patent for a foldable phone with transparent display

12 April 2019 2

Like almost all manufacturers, LG is also said to be working on a few foldable display smartphones. While the company claims that it is in no hurry to come up with a foldable smartphone, one of the patents filed by the South Korean company does give a hint that it is working on something different from almost all the brands. The patent spotted by LetsGoDigital suggests that the company is looking to make a foldable smartphone with a transparent display.

While it does sound straight out of sci-fi comic, but, if everything goes as per plan, we may soon get to see one such device in market. This futuristic smartphone when held unfolded and straight may not be transparent to let users read the content displayed. Its only when held at a certain angle, transparency increases and users will be able to see through the display, as hinted in the patent.

In addition to the transparency, the phone may also have rear mounted sensors which may get activated once the transparency goes above 20% letting users not only see through but also operate the phone from its rear panel. The patent also states that when folded, the device may look like a regular phone and when unfolded it may bring out a tablet sized display with minimal bezels.

There is a mention of multiple camera setup with laser sensors which could help in creating a digital 3D version of objects. Additionally, the user may be able to decide which screen he wants to see when the device is collapsed.

While we’ve covered many upcoming foldable phones, as of now most of them have a followed a regular design language like the Huawei Mate X or Samsung Galaxy Fold or even Royole Flex Pai, however, we’re looking forward to innovative designs like this patent from LG or the one which has been showcased by Xiaomi multiple times.

Though this is just a patent filed by LG and may never see the day of light, Foldable smartphones have opened an entirely new and exciting paradigm for innovation. It is up to brands to paint a new picture in this plan canvas and we sure are excited and waiting for the new ones to try them.
