MediaTek has officially introduced its first-ever 5G mobile processor lineup named Dimensity. The first processor in the lineup is Dimensity 1000 and it comes with an integrated 5G modem. It is the same chipset that was showcased at Computex 2019 about six months ago.
The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 is an octa-core processor built on the 7nm FinFET manufacturing process. It has four ARM Cortex A-77 high-power cores clocked at 2.6GHz and four Cortex A-55 low-power cores clocked at 2.0GHz. It is accompanied by the ARM Mali-G77 MC9 GPU for handling intensive graphics processes.
In terms of 5G connectivity, it supports both Standalone (SA) and Non-Standalone (NSA) networks. It currently works only on the Sub-6 frequency band but MediaTek has plans for releasing a mmWave variant as well. The processor is claimed to be capable of offering up to 4.7Gbps download speed and up to 2.5Gbps upload speed. This is said to be twice the download speed with 40% more power efficiency when compared with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 featuring X50 5G modem.
The Dimensity 1000 comes with APU 3.0, the latest AI processing unit from MediaTek. It is a hexa-core APU with a peak performance of 4.5 TOPS. It further has a Penta-core ISP which is being touted as the world's first. It is compatible with up to 80-megapixel single shooters and a wide range of multi-camera options up to 32-megapixel and 16-megapixel sensors combined with telephoto, HDR, and depth sensors. It is capable of supporting 1080p displays with up to 120Hz refresh rate and 2K displays with up to 90Hz refresh rate.
Joe Chen, President of MediaTek said,
"Our Dimensity series is a culmination of MediaTek's investment in 5G and positions us as a leader driving 5G development and innovation. Our 5G technology goes head-to-head with anyone in the industry. We chose the name Dimensity to highlight how our 5G solutions are driving new waves of innovation and experiences, much like the fabled fifth dimension. Our first announced chip, MediaTek Dimensity 1000, gives consumers a significantly faster, more intelligent and all-around incredible mobile experience."
MediaTek is marketing the Dimensity 1000 as the world's first dual 5G SIM supported processor. It means it will allow users to use two SIM cards with both connected to the 5G network at the same time. Other noteworthy features include 2x 5G carrier aggregation, WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. It will start arriving in markets by the end of 2019 but a wider release will happen in Q1 and Q2 2020 in the United States and Europe respectively.
