There is no rest for the wicked and hackers keep proving this to be true. Their constant efforts have culminated in instilling fear in millions of people. While ransomware is a malicious attack on a wide scale, hackers are even trying their luck by hacking into sensitive data on popular social media giants. A hack on Instagram led to a controversial scandal where the account of the celebrity Selena Gomez was compromised. This lead to rather private pictures of Justin Bieber appearing on Instagram.
Facebook, owners of Instagram were quick to address the matter and confirmed that personal details from high-profile accounts, including email IDs and phone numbers, had been stolen as a result of an API bug. Facebook was quick to resolve the issue but could they do it without any damage being done? Well, sadly, not entirely! The hackers were able to procure certain information from the targeted accounts. However, no passwords were stolen or exposed and all such account users were notified of the breach.
Here’s what a representative of Instagram had to say:
Our main concern is for the safety and security of our community. As always, we encourage people to be vigilant about the security of their account and exercise caution if they encounter any suspicious activity such as unrecognized incoming calls, texts and emails.
What can users do to keep their accounts safe? Well, not too much it seems although Instagram does have a two-factor authentication method which helps keep your account a little more secure
