Dell Alienware Area-51m gaming laptop with manual CPU/GPU upgrade released

09 January 2019 2

Dell has taken wraps off the Alienware Area-51m flagship gaming laptop at the ongoing CES 2019 event. It is a really expensive product but brings more than enough features and specifications to justify the hefty price tag of $2,549. The biggest highlight of the laptop is that it supports the manual upgrade of the processor and graphics card.

The Dell Alienware Area-51m is being touted as the world's most powerful gaming laptop and to a lot of extents, it seems to be true. It sports a 17-inch IPS display (up to 1080p resolution) with 60Hz refresh rate on the standard panel. There are options to choose from display panels with NVIDIA G-Sync, 144Hz refresh rate or Tobii Eye Tracking. The buyers will also be able to go for the panel with all the three technologies which will obviously cost a premium.

In terms of power and performance, Dell has loaded the beast with 9th Gen octa-core Intel Core processors which go as high as the Core i9-9900K chipset. It makes use of the Intel Z390 motherboard which means as long as there is a processor compatible with it, you will be able to use it in the laptop for manual upgrade. It further offers a choice among an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2060 with 6GB GDDR6 RAM, GeForce RTX 2070 with 8GB of GDDR6 RAM, and GeForce RTX 2080 with 8GB of GDDR6 RAM. And just like the CPU, users will be able to upgrade the graphics card as well.

It features 8GB RAM as the base offering but supports up to 64GB of LPDDR4 RAM. In the storage front, one can choose from single, dual, and triple storage options with capacity ranging from 256GB to 3TB. Other features include an HD webcam, dual-array microphones, stereo speakers, three USB 3.1 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) port, HDMI 2.0 port, and a Mini DisplayPort 1.4.

The whole package is powered by a 90Whr battery which is definitely a big one but is unlikely to good enough for lasting long (especially during gaming). This is simply because of all the heavy resources that the Alienware Area-51m comes loaded with. It has been released in Dark Side of the Moon and Lunar Light color variants. The beast is said to go on sale starting January 29th.

The ability to change/upgrade the graphics card and the processor is rightly termed as the biggest highlight. This is what makes Dell stand out in the crowd.
