Amazon at its September event unveiled a host of new devices and services, including its own products in the Echo lineup. Together with them, Amazon announced a home robot called the Astro Robot that also doubles as a security camera on the move.
The Astro household robot has a rotating screen that is mounted onto a base with wheels. It uses advanced navigation technology to find its way around your home and avoid any obstacles. It moves around the objects and keeps a safe distance from your pets as well.
Astro follows you room to room when you say, "Astro, follow me." and it performs several actions. It can play music, podcasts, or your favorite shows. You can do a lot more with the robot on the move just what you do with any Alexa-powered device in your house. You can set reminders and allow the robot to remind you about them; you can set alarms and make calls as well.
And, when you’re not at home, you can use the Astro app to see a live view of your whole home. A periscope camera is attached to the base of the device that can be raised or lowered in case the objects are not in the line of sight. With the help of the integration with Amazon’s smart home security subsidiary Ring, Astro can flag potential intruders and you can tap on the siren to blow in case you find something is suspicious. You will get real-time home monitoring alerts from the Alexa app when Astro detects certain sounds like glass breaking, or smoke or carbon monoxide alarms via a feature called Alexa Guard.
To safeguard your privacy, Amazon is allowing you to completely turn off all the inlets like the microphone, camera, and motion sensors. They all can be switched off by pressing a mere button. Users can also designate “out of bounds zone,” or certain rooms that are off-limits to the robot.
The cost of the Astro robot is $999.99 and is available via invitation only. The release date of the Astro robot is still unknown but Amazon did reveal that it will start grating invitations later this year.
