Nintendo’s next gaming console, Switch will be available from March 3 for $300 worldwide. Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced the release date of the console at an event in Tokyo.
The Switch is a portable gaming console which looks like a tablet and can be hooked up to a TV or can be used even while on the move. The console is ideal for living rooms as well as portable play. The tablet comes with gamepads, called Joy-Controllers which can connect to a TV, and become a traditional gamepad, or can also be used as individual motion controllers. The joycon controllers support haptic-touch, an infrared camera as well as an NFC reader that can work with Amiibos. The company says that Switch’s battery life will last 2.5 hours to 6 hours when undocked.
The Switch has a capacitative touchscreen, which is a first for Nintendo. The company’s earlier gaming consoles, including DS, 3DS, and Wii U all comes with resistive touchscreens. Nintendo Switch’s launch is important for the company, as its previous last launch the Wii U failed to generate excitement or sales.
Nintendo showed a handful of games at the launch event, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is officially a launch title due out on March 3rd. The company says there are 80 games in development with the Switch.
Nintendo had announced that a limited number of preorders will be available on Jan 13, 2017. Apart from that pre-orders in Japan will begin on Jan 21, 2017, there is no information about when the Nintendo Switch will be available for pre-order in the US or other regions.
