What would your reaction be in you opened YouTube and saw that almost all music videos were blocked? Unfortunately, this was a sight which people in Finland had to behold. This was a result of a failed licensing agreement with a local performance copyrights agency called Teosto. YouTube put up a warning on its website with regard to this. Here’s what YouTube had to say regarding its choice to block the videos:
We were unable to reach a new licensing agreement with TEOSTO. Because of this, some videos containing music will be blocked in Finland.
What an unfortunate way to usher in the nation’s 100 years of Independence. What’s worse is that the people of the country will not be able to unite in listening to their national anthem on YouTube on the 6th of December. The national anthem has been blocked off on YouTube.
Reports claim that Teosto has updated its licensing deal with YouTube. While this may be a good sign, it still may take a while for the missing videos to be back up and working. Needless to say, this fiasco created an uproar in Finland and users began taking to Twitter to express their dismay.
So, is this it for the citizens of Finland? Well, it seems like they may have found a little trick to get around this annoyance. Developer Alessandro Costa has built a handy Chrome extension that unblocks any geo-restricted video on YouTube. Users on other browsers can also replace the ‘tube’ with ‘pak’ in YouTube URLs in order to access the video.
