Google testing Assistant integration with Android Messages

23 August 2018 4

Since the debut of Google Assistant with Allo in 2016, Google has expanded it into a number of products and services. It can even be found in televisions and smart speakers and now, it seems to be getting ready for another integration. As spotted by an XDA recognized developer Kieron Quinn aka Quinny899, Android Messages is all set to get Assistant in the future.

He and the XDA team were able to get Assistant working on Android Messages. The functionality of the same is currently found to be limited only to suggesting weather and nearby restaurants. It was accessible within an SMS conversation with no option of interacting with it separately like it is possible on Allo.

This integration makes sense considering how Google paused working on Allo earlier this year to focus on "Chat" inspired by the RCS standard. It has already migrated a bunch of Allo features like stickers and Smart Reply to enrich the messaging experience. As a result, Google would obviously want to offer Assistant integration as well.

There is no doubt that Allo could not compete with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger but with default SMS messaging app, Google has a better shot at making all these features accessible to a higher number of users.
