Verizon along with Google will launch the enhanced messaging (RCS) in the messages app on Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL starting December 6. While Google’s Pixel range will be the first in line to get this feature, other devices are slated to get an update in 2019.
RCS is basically a text messaging standard which will replace the old school SMS and is meant for Android Phones. It supports advanced features like sharing high-resolution images and videos, typing indicators and a better group chat. This is more like an iMessage service that iPhone has however without end to end encryption.
The service will be called Chat and Verizon’s implementation of RCS will be compatible with other networks since it supports GSMA’s Universal Profile. However, at the moment the support from other networks is a bit slow and they have committed to updating to universal profile for a better adaptability. Fortunately, Chat will work in the default messaging app on Android and users will not be required to download any other app.
“Verizon and Google will be rolling out enhanced messaging (RCS) in the Messages app on Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL beginning this Thursday, December 6th. This messaging service brings, for example, typing indicators, very large group chats and the ability to transfer large files between the owners of these smartphones.” Said Verizon in a statement.
