Pixel and Essential Phone receiving January 2019 security patch

10 January 2019 1

If you are a Google Pixel or Essential Phone user, you should be looking out for an update notification. Both these devices have started to receive the January 2019 security patch level. It is the first monthly Android security patch for the year and is packed with fixes for various vulnerabilities.

In the Pixel lineup, the update is available for Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, and Pixel C tablet. It should be noted that this is only a monthly security update and not a major upgrade. It means if your older Pixel device is currently running Android Oreo, it will continue to do so. You should not mistake this update for Android Pie upgrade.

Other than the usual dose of fixing security issues, Google has made improvements to the audio quality while a video is being recorded. It is hard to say whether it is a small or major improvement but you should be able to check that once the update becomes available for your particular unit.

As we said in the beginning, January 2019 security patch update has started to roll out for both Pixel and Essential Phone devices. It is only a matter of time that it becomes available for your particular unit. In the meantime, you can also check for the update manually by visiting system settings.

2019 brings along good news to Essential phone owners. Not big in number, but the January security patch will no doubt bring a smile on their faces :)
