03 May 2019 5

Last year on October 9th Google took the stage to wrap off the cover from the much-awaited flagship Pixel 3 series. Both the premium Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL competes against the top-tier flagships of the last year. However, being the premium phones both the devices were released at a hefty price tag. Ahead of the Pixel lineup phones, the company sold Nexus lineup devices with stock Android OS experience and solid mid-range hardware at an affordable price tag.

However, from last few years since the original Pixel phone, the company is targetting the high-end buyers. From the past few months, we had been hearing rumors on a continuous basis that Google is internally working on a couple of mid-range phones under Pixel branding.

As per the latest leaks, the company will be releasing new mid-range phones as Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. Both will be offered as a trimmed down variants of flagship Pixel 3 series. Being the mid-rangers the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be significantly cheaper than the premium models. Still, the leaks and rumors indicate we can expect the mid-rangers will carry few goodies of the premium models as well.

Today ahead of the official unveiling we will preview all the details we know so far regarding the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL on the basis of leaks and rumors. Without any further ado, let's kick off with the Price an release details.

Price and Release

So far all the Pixel lineup phones locked models were exclusively available via Verizon in the US. Recently T-mobile confirmed support for upcoming Pixel phones. This means the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be the company's first lineup which will be available from a number of carriers in the US.

Google recently released a teaser with a tagline “Help is on the way.” The teaser confirms unveiling on May 7th. Another important aspect is Google I/O 2019 will kick off from May 7th, So the chances are high the aforementioned teaser is for the upcoming Pixel 3a phones.

Initially, we heard rumors Google's budget-friendly lineup will be dubbed as Pixel Lite and Pixel XL Lite. However Google recently accidentally posted the Pixel 3a and 3a XL names on the official site. The names screenshot was shared by The Verge and now as expected the link page is dead now. It is almost confirmed the upcoming Google phones will be released as Pixel 3a and 3a XL.

As far as the pricing is a concern, it is confirmed the Pixel 3a lineup will be cheaper than the Pixel 3 series. The Pixel 3a rumored to cost between $400 whereas the Pixel 3a XL is expected to cost $479.

Design and display

Being the Google Pixel phone the Pixel 3a lineup rumors are swirling at a rapid pace and with each passing day, we have something new and exciting regarding the upcoming pixel phones. Thanks to the continous stream of rumors we have many details regarding what to expect from Pixel 3a series in terms of design and display.

The guys behind 91Mobiles recently shared an alleged 360 video of Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL which reveals the design from all angles. The device is featuring a unibody plastic design. Another important aspect is it lacks the front-facing speakers instead it comes with bottom firing speaker. The 3.5mm headphone jack is back with the new mid-rangers.

As per so far rumors the Pixel 3a features a 5.56-inches with Full HD+ screen resolution. The display aspect ratio is 2:1 and the pixels density will be 434 pixels-per-inch. The Pixel 3a XL will have slightly larger 6-inches display with Full HD+ screen resolution. Both have LCD display panels instead of AMOLED. Both Pixel 3a and 3a XL lack the notch which Google introduced with the Pixel 3 Xl.

The Pixel 3a is almost similar to the iPhone XR in terms of size. Both the phones have bezels at the top and bottom of the display. On the front-facing side, the Pixel 3a shares aesthetics with the Pixel 3 whereas on the rear side it comes with a two-tone finish. The fingerprint scanner is on the rear side. As the leaked images are not from the official sources that's why we will recommend to take it with a pinch of salt.

Being the mid-range phones the Pixel 3a lineup will certainly have toned down hardware as opposed to the Pixel 3 series. The latest report from WinFuture relying on the retail sources claim the Pixel 3a and 3a XL built-in native storage will be 64GB. In terms of color options both the phones will be available in black, blue and a new "Iris" color with violet and blue tones.

The Pixel 3a will be running on the Qualcomm's Octa-core Snapdragon 670 chipset whereas the Pixel 3a XL will have the Snapdragon 710 SoC. The Pixel 3a XL recently allegedly appeared at the Geekbench listing with 6GB RAM. The Pixel 3a base model likely to have 4GB RAM. At the moment it is still not confirmed whether the Pixel 3a lineup will have MicroSD slot or not.

The Pixel 3a will have single snapper on the rear and front-facing side. Both the Pixel 3 lineup phones have dual selfie snappers and single sensor on the rear side. The primary sensor on the rear is expected to be a 12.2MP module. It will have AI goodies like the premium models.

Up front, the selfie snapper will be an 8MP sensor. The front and rear snappers likely to be the same we had seen on the Pixel 3. However, the toned down chipset will certainly affect the photo quality because of lower ISP as opposed to the standard Pixel 3. Once again Google will rely the software prowess to enhance the camera experience on the Pixel 3a lineup. We can expect still the Pixel 3a camera setup will perform better than most of the smartphones of its range.

The battery cell on the Pixel 3a is rumored to be 2,915mAh cell. Google used similar size battery on Pixel 3, So we can expect it can easily last one day on single. Google stock OS optimization will help the Pixel 3a to last longer. As far as the Pixel 3a XL battery cell is a concern, it is still in the dark.

Apt to see the 3.5mm headphone jack in a toned down Pixel phone. But what's Google's overall roadmap regarding the 3.5mm headphone jack, especially in the coming Pixel 4?

Google is still making do with a single rear shooter, though you cannot argue the quality Pixel phones offer. Software optimization is excellent on their side.
