This is the reason Pixel 3a comes with a headphone jack

15 May 2019 2

The Google Pixel 3a is a good budget smartphone, especially for those who want to have Google user experience without having to spend a fortune on its flagships. Even though the phone has toned down specifications, it has one thing that you will not find on Pixel 3. It is the 3.5mm headphone jack which has started to become a luxury among expensive phones. And now, Google has revealed the reason it offered a headphone jack with Pixel 3a.

Google's Product Manager Soniya Jobanputra shared on the sidelines of Google I/O 2019 that they wanted to offer more flexibility to Pixel 3a users. This is the reason they decided against ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack. She said that even though Pixel 3a users can still go for "ultimate" audio experience via USB Type-C or Bluetooth, the jack is there to give them the freedom of opting for any method they want.

Jobanputra said,

"We debated on this headphone jack but we really felt that consumers at this price point in this price tier really needed flexibility, and that’s what that headphone jack gives you. We still support digital audio, and it is the ultimate way to consume your audio. You can either use the USB-C adapter on the bottom, or you can use Bluetooth headphones. And digital audio is incredible. But, a lot of people have headphones, and we didn’t need to create anymore e-waste in the world so we’ve decided to put a 3.5mm headset jack in so that people could use the accessories that they already had available to them."

One can also infer from the statement that Google believes that people who are able to afford Pixel 3 smartphones can surely pay for Pixel Buds or any other third-party wireless earphones. While this makes sense, it does not mean that if someone can buy something then he actually wants to buy it. What are your thoughts on the whole headphone jack situation and the stance from Google? Well, if Google Pixel 3a is offering either the USB Type-C or the Bluetooth connectivity, there's no harm in just "having" the 3.5mm jack just for the sake of it.
