Google developing app that integrates workplace tools and messaging apps | Report

29 January 2020 0

Google is said to be working on yet another communication application that would serve the businesses particularly. According to a report from The Information, Google is unifying the workplace tools and messaging apps into one service so that the businesses could work better. This sounds more like a competition to some already successful apps like Slack and Teams, though due to scantier information, we can’t tell if the upcoming app differs in any way.

But talking about the competitions, the aforementioned app integrates features like voice and video-based calling, alongside some productivity tools like Dropbox and Salesforce and Google doesn’t yet have anything near to them that could be called a complete platform for the business users.

However, the report cites a couple of sources that have used the application and reports that the app would compete more effectively with application suits from Microsoft and others.

The report does claim that the mobile application specifically being designed for businesses will bring together the functions of several standalone apps the company already offers, including parts of its G suite like Gmail and Google Drive. And, for the instant messaging essence, the app which is under testing also includes Hangouts Meet, Google’s video conferencing app and Hangouts Chat, a real-time message app. the functions

The report citing the two sources even claims that Thomas Kurian, CEO Of Google’s cloud unit, discussed the new app internal at a conference held this month for the unit’s salespeople and business partners. This suggests that Google is quite serious about the project and may introduce it this year only.

The Information also reports that this could be a way for Google to gain enterprise customers who have moved all their communication to apps like Microsoft Teams.

Note that there are many more existing Google-branded messaging platforms available and each one offering similar functions plus functions of their own that identify their existence. The journey that started long back ago with the Google Talk has now emerged and is expanding even further and this unnamed unified app is going to be the company’s another effort.

The most recent update on Google’s efforts on making its existing instant messaging apps more sophisticated was recorded in 2018. Previously, it was assumed that Google will bring a standalone app called “Chat” but sooner, Google clarified that Chat is not something new and it has already been incorporated into Android Messages (Via AndroidAuthority). It rather urged mobile carriers to change the way they host texting and this new method is called Chat. This method is actually a label for RCS and it’s being used to offer “consumer-friendly” experience.

But, the latest effort from Google is going to be a bit different where it is testing to integrate the messaging service and productivity tools altogether. We look forward to gaining more insights on the same in the coming days or weeks.
