Google is reportedly working on something different for the next-gen Nest Hub smart display device. It is essentially developing the new Nest Hub in a detachable tablet form factor. The report is coming from 9to5Google citing a source that has proven to be familiar with Google's development plans.
The alleged Nest Hub is said to have a display part that can be detached whenever a user wants. It means while it will still be marketed as a smart display for your kitchen or living room, it can also be used as a tablet. Its base that will double up as a speaker will be removable. If a user wishes to use it as a smart home device, they can re-attach it with ease.
The operating system preference for this new rumored device is currently unknown. We know that Google recently updated current-gen Nest Hub devices to Fuchsia OS from Cast OS. Since the next model is said to work as a stand-alone tablet as well, it may decide to go with Chrome OS or even the traditionally used Android.
While the reporter form factor is certainly a unique one, Google is not the first one to give it a try. Lenovo has attempted a similar concept with its Smart Tab M10. It is an Android tablet, to begin with, but can be attached to an Alexa-powered dock to work as a smart display device. Google is tipped to launch its next-gen Nest Hub device sometime later this year and we should hear more details in the time being.
