The growing smartphone market may receive an even larger sensor soon as a first rumor on the same has posed the possibility. According to a new rumor brought to notice via Twitter, the larger sensor that is 150MP is coming yet again from the pioneer of image sensors – Samsung. Yes, on paper, it is a very large sensor and its arrival may sound totally ridiculous, but there are actually great chances that the sensor is on its way.
Samsung recently launched the 108MP ISOCELL Bright HM1 image sensor which is employed inside the Galaxy S20 Ultra. The sensor came with the new Nonacell technology where it uses 9 to 1 pixel binning for brighter images. According to the rumor, the yet-to-come 150MP image sensor uses the same Nonacell tech that 108MP ISOCELL Bright HM1 features and it also has a mere footprint of around 1-inch, which is even better.
So, the 150MP sensor will produce 16MP bright shots compared to 12MP shots from 108MP ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor.
And, once again, the leading Chinese players are expected to make use of this new sensor in their phones first. The rumor specifically puts the name of Xiaomi ahead as the notable third-party company that will utilize the 150MP shooter in one of its flagship phones that are scheduled to be unveiled in Q4 2020.
The rumor further suggests that Oppo and Vivo are likely to employ the new sensor in the first quarter of 2021. The third-party smartphone manufacturers are likely to pair the sensor with the unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset.
Note that tip came in December 2019 even suggested that Samsung was working on a 144MP image sensor based on the 14nm process but we haven't yet heard more about the same.
Well, we can’t comment on these rumored timeframes amid Coronavirus pandemic that is already taking a toll on many businesses, including semiconductors. Several big events and plans have already been canceled in the light of the virus and currently, we can’t forecast what will happen from now. But the companies set their goals years ahead and if 150MP sensor is in the plan already, we would hear more about the same pretty soon.
