Qualcomm was supposed to launch the Plus variant of its Snapdragon 865 SoC, just what it did last year. But seemingly, the plan has been canceled. Meizu’s CMO, Wan Zhiqiang, shared a post on Weibo, stating there will be no Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC this year. Reportedly, Wan shared the information while interacting with a user on Weibo. Well, he didn’t share the reason behind the same but it looks like COVID-19 is to be blamed that has just messed up several crucial segments already.
The Plus variant pluses some capabilities to the existing SoC to make it a little better contender in overall performance. Last year, the Snapdragon 855 Plus variant came with overclocked speeds and better GPU to enhance your gaming experience and performance as well. It was expected that this year the Snapdragon 865 Plus would get similar improvements. But it is not happening anymore, well, considering what Meizu’s CMO has mentioned.
Many upcoming phones were expected to come equipped with the Snapdragon 865 Plus processor but unfortunately, it may not happen now. Manufacturers like OnePlus, released OnePlus 7T Pro last year with Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, but it looks like, this year, similar upgrades are not going to happen this year, as apparently, there is no Snapdragon 865 Plus processor.
Earlier, it was rumored that Qualcomm would make a refresh with Snapdragon 865 Plus but it was never guaranteed. Now, the post of Meizu’s CMO comes as a credible source and we would like to give it a thought. But still, a direct confirmation from Qualcomm itself would make more sense and bring more clarity, after all.
It is also possible that the executive was just answering the curious questions of his followers regarding the upcoming Meizu 17 series and made reference to the company's development, stating that there will be no phone with Snapdragon 865 Plus coming this year.
If the launch of the Snapdragon 865 Plus happens, it would push the price tags of upcoming phones even further and make them more expensive. It would be a big deal, especially at a time when people are more considerate and spending wisely.
