Qualcomm has announced 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform at IFA 2020 to make 2-in-1 laptops thinner, lighter, better-connected at the same time. Qualcomm promises that the new platform has been designed to enable industry-leading 5G PC experiences. The platform supports 5G (sub-6 GHz and mmWave) connectivity with peak speeds of up to 7.5Gbps. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 and advanced camera and audio experiences.
The new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 integrates octa-core Kryo 495 64-bit CPU and is based on the 7nm process. It comes with Snapdragon X55 Modem-RF System, Qualcomm’s Hexagon 690 DSP processor.
According to Qualcomm, the new Snapdragon, the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G delivers over 50% better system-wide performance and battery life. Qualcomm touts with Adreno GPU, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 offers superior performance. According to the company’s claims, the platform promises up to 25+ continuous hours.
Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G compute platform supports 4K HDR and 32MP single camera or two 16MP cameras. It retains the Qualcomm Spectra 390 image signal processor (ISP) that was provided on 2018's chip.
Qualcomm has partnered with Acer to develop a new connected PC with long battery life. It is the Acer Spin 7 convertible laptop announced with the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform. Acer promises a “multi-day” battery life, more than 24 hours with its new Spin 7 convertible laptop. It comes with a 14-inch 1080p IPS display panel with Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass, a 360-degree hinge, two USB-C ports, and a USB-A port.
Acer has not yet shared the pricing and availability details of the Spin 7 convertible laptop.
