Netflix, the streaming giant has launched its own e-commerce site where it will sell lifestyle products and clothes related to its original shows like Stranger Things. The new retail outlet is called Netflix.shop from where the company will catalog and sell the products directly to the consumers.
In a blog post, Josh Simon, Netflix’s VP of consumer products said,
Netflix.shop will sell exclusive, limited editions of “carefully selected, high-quality apparel and lifestyle products tied to our shows and brand on a regular basis.
The catalog that is currently present on the Netflix.shop includes products from streetwear and action figures based on anime series “Yasuke” and “Eden” as well as limited-edition apparel. Other products debuting this month are decorative items inspired by the French thriller series “Lupin” in collaboration with Musee du Louvre. The company has introduced three up-and-coming designers: Nathalie Nguyen, Kristopher Kites, and Jordan Bentley.
Netflix has also announced that soon it will sell exclusive products from your beloved titles like "The Witcher" and "Stranger Things," as well as new Netflix logo-wear from Japanese fashion house BEAMS.
Netflix.shop has been developed with Shopify. The shopping site will first be available in the US before expanding to other countries in the coming months.
Note that Netflix already sells so many products based on its original shows via Target, Walmart, Amazon, H&M, Sephora, and other retailers. But this is the first time it has stepped into the online retailing business and launched a fully-owned e-commerce site to sell products directly to consumers. This way Netflix is developing another good source for its income.
Unlike other OTT platforms, Netflix generates its revenue purely from its subscription models. It does not run ads nor does it send user data to any third-party service. It is purely a streaming service that offers access to a wide library of movies and television, including its own original shows. With the help of its owned-and-operated retail outlet, Netflix might able to increase the engagement even better.
Netflix currently has 207M global subscribers and a huge fan following of its original shows like “The Witcher” who would want to have merch coming directly from the company itself. It’s a good move from Netflix and in the near future, we might see more merch getting added to its catalog.
