At Accelerate 2019, Lenovo showcased its first-ever foldable laptop and said it would arrive in 2020. It has now offered a more specific possible release timeline which is in Q2 2020. The announcement was made at the Canalys Channels Forum in Barcelona where Lenovo's Director of Global Commercial Comms and Brand, Milanka Muecke, and Chief Operating Officer, Gianfranco Lanci, graced the stage.
Muecke pulled the unnamed Lenovo foldable laptop out of her handbag at the stage to demonstrate its portability aspect. The 13-inch OLED display laptop sat inside her handbag comfortably. This is undoubtedly a good sign for those who love to get work done even when on the move. This will eliminate the need for carrying a big laptop backpack around which can be troublesome at times.
She was joined by Gianfranco Lanci, Chief Operating Officer at Lenovo, at the stage who added:
"It will start shipping probably Q2 next year. Hardware is ready but we need to still fix certain things from a software point of view and that doesn't depend 100 percent on us."
It is clear that even though Lenovo is eying a Q2 2020 release for the foldable laptop, it is yet to be confirmed. Lanci did not talk about what software-related things could delay the release but it is likely to be related to app compatibility and the operating system as well.
If Lenovo manages to launch within the expected time frame, it will beat Microsoft's Surface Neo by a significant margin. The latter is set for a Holidays 2020 release which is about a year away. Nevertheless, we should get a better idea of the release date as the time will pass.
