LG asked Reddit what they feel about notches; post deleted now

30 March 2018 5

We see tech companies following a new trend from time to time which is usually well-received by fans and buyers. But in past few months, there has been a trend which is being disliked by a vast majority of users. It is the trend of offering a notch at the top of phone's display which was made mainstream by Apple's iPhone X. Like many other Android OEMs, LG is also expected to offer the notch with its LG G7 flagship but for some reason, it decided to ask Reddit community their views about the notch.

The Reddit thread was created on Android sub-Reddit by LG Support account where the team invited Redditors to have a discussion about the existence of notches. Here's what the post read,

"We’ve seen a LOT of comments around “The Notch” over the past few weeks, from people who love the quick access to the menu to those that hate the wasted screen space. We would love to gather some more feedback to share with our R&D team= and this is where you come in. So…what do you think? Love the notch? Or is it Notch your thing?"

The thread attracted a lot of comments from the users who were eager to share their views on the notch. And as you might expect, most of them were against the idea of having a smartphone with the notch. They give different reasons for disliking the notch which includes no symmetry, simply ugly, and unnecessary addition.

While the post mentioned that feedback will be shared with LG's R&D team, the post has now been deleted and locked. It means you can still visit the link and read comments but you can't add a new comment or read what LG posted to start the thread. It currently has over 500 comments and top 200 comments among them reveal a huge disliking for the notched displays.

The exact reason behind why the post was deleted is unknown but it could be due to the fact that LG did not receive the kind of response it was expecting. This is similar to the kind of backlash OnePlus received when it confirmed that OnePlus 6 will be coming with a notch.

It is not hard to guess that Android fans hate notches for the past but considering how more and more phones are coming with notches, it can be a while before OEMs stop adding notches. Maybe they are hopeful that fans will change their perception in near future but for the time being, it seems like notches are here to stay.
