LG 88Z9 8K OLED TV now available for preorders

03 June 2019 0

LG has officially started taking preorders for the LG 88Z9, the world's first commercially available 8K OLED TV. It was first unveiled at IFA 2018 followed by a showcase event at CES 2019 earlier this year. It has currently been made available for preorders in South Korea but will be expanded to North America and Europe in the third quarter.

The LG 88Z9 sports an 88-inch 8K Ultra HD display with 7680 x 4320 pixels resolution which turns out to be over 33 million pixels. It means the TV has four times more pixels than a 4K TV and 16 times more pixels than a 1080p TV. It is currently one of the most powerful and pixel-rich TVs that you can buy if you can manage to afford it.

Under the hood, it has LG's Alpha 9 Second Generation 8K processor which will be playing a crucial role in how the TV will perform. The powerful chipset with the help of "deep learning technology and access to an extensive database of visual information" will be upscaling the 4K content to 8K quality. This is a crucial aspect considering that there is barely an 8K content available out there.

LG says that the TV will not only upscale the visual aspect of the content but also improve the audio output. It will make use of algorithms to up-mix two-channel audio to create a virtual 5.1 surround sound experience. It will result in enhanced sound effects in movies, deeper bass in music, and clearer voices in sporting events.

Other than this, the LG 88Z9 will offer both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa digital assistants but that will be limited to certain markets. It has been priced at 50 million Won (about $42,000) but during preorders, it can be purchased for 40 million Won (about $34,000). The preorder offer also includes a free air purifier to make the deal a little sweeter.
