Xiaomi is planning to launch the Redmi S2 budget smartphone in India. The Xiaomi Redmi S2 is an entry-level device which will feature dual cameras and a face unlock feature that is currently only present on a handful of Xiaomi devices.
The Redmi S2 is expected to feature a 5.7-inch thin bezel design with 1440x720 pixels resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. A firmware leak reveals that it will be powered by MSM8953, which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC that is also found on Redmi Note 5.
The dual rear camera set-up will include a 12MP Sony IMX486 or Omnivision OV12A10 sensors and a second will have a 5MP Samsung-made S5K5E8 sensor. The front camera will have a 5 MP Samsung S5K5E8 sensor with features like EIS, portrait mode and face unlock.
The Redmi S2 will have a 3,080mAh battery and will probably run Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box. The firmware mentions that the smartphone will launch in India and China, but it doesn’t mention any other markets.
Xiaomi has become the largest smartphone brand in India due to strong sales of its budget and mid-range smartphones. The company’s budget offerings including the Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 have seen great traction. Its upcoming Redmi S2 and Android-One based Mi A2 smartphones are expected to further strengthen the company’s position in the Indian smartphone market.
