The Global smart speaker report from research firm Strategy Analytics for Q3, 2018 shows that the shipments grew at an astonishing rate of 197% year-on-year, to reach a record 22.7 million units. With this exceptional growth, it will only a short time before the smart speaker surpasses the 100 million units shipped milestone in the final quarter of the year.
In Q3 2018, Amazon led the smart speaker market with over 32% market share and 7.2 million shipments. On the second spot is Google with 23% market share and 5.2 million units shipped. Alibaba was on the third spot with 9.5% market share and 2.2 million units shipped. Chinese firm Baidu saw the highest increase in market share from 1% in Q2 2018 to 8% in Q3 2018 and 1.9 million units shipped.
Another Chinese giant, Xiaomi grabbed the fifth spot with 8.4% market share and 1.9 million shipped. The company has shown a huge increase as it shipped just 0.1 million units in Q3 2017. Cupertino giant Apple is on the sixth position with 4.8% market share and 1.1 million units shipped.
This year, China has emerged as the second largest market for smart speakers after the USA. Strategy Analytics believes that a twelve-fold annual increase is expected in Chinese shipments in 2018. The US market is still dominated by Amazon and Google in the smart speaker market.
David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics, said: The number of smart speakers in use globally will crash through the 100-million-unit barrier this month and exceed 125 million by the end of the year. The market has reached this key milestone faster than pretty much any other consumer technology device to have launched over the past decade.
