Samsung Galaxy S10 update will bring improved fingerprint scanning

15 March 2019 2

The Samsung Galaxy S10 series is equipped with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner, which according to reports the company has been working on for well over a year. The new scanner is much easier to actually access than the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner of the Galaxy S9 and S8 smartphones.

The Galaxy S10’s in-display fingerprint scanner is reportedly not quite as fast as the older capacitive fingerprint scanner. Some Galaxy S10 users have already encountered problems with the fingerprint scanning function while completing mobile payments which require some form of authentication.

A number of complaints about the fingerprint sensor have emerged, which has led Samsung to make a statement. The company has stated that it will be releasing a new update that will solve the issues.

“There can be many occasions where users find the fingerprint scanner doesn’t work well, for example, when you are in a dry environment, or when your finger skin is really dry, or when you have a scratch on your fingerprint,” Samsung stated. “The accuracy has been improved through the first update of software recently just in one week since the launch, and we will continue providing updates to make the scanner work better.”

Digital Trends mobile editor Julian Chokkattu stated, “It takes some getting used to, but it’s the best in-display fingerprint sensor I’ve tested. I’d love if all phones switched to this design. It’s not the quickest, but it’s more convenient,” in his review of the Galaxy S10 Plus.

Samsung released the first software update for the Galaxy S10 on February 27, which brings Instagram mode for the camera and also remaps the Bixby key. The update also tweaks the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor’s performance. A number of posts made to the official Samsung community forum have noted the change for the better. Samsung’s statements suggest that the company will be rolling out more updates soon to further improve the performance of the Galaxy S10 series.

  • JRE had a ultrasonic fingerprint test on the Galaxy S10 and it came out with flaying colors even after scratches. Still it's cool to see Samsung bring an update to improve it even more.
