50% of smartphones to have triple camera sensors by 2021: Report

16 May 2019 4

A new report from Counterpoint Research claims that the number of phones with a triple camera or higher setups will cross 50% by 2021. The triple camera set-up trend has become a rage this year and is expected to continue.

Nearly 6% of smartphones sold globally till March 2018, had three or more rear camera sensors. By 2019-end the number is expected to go up to 15% and 35% by the end of 2020. Nearly 40 smartphones have been launched as of April this year which had three or more camera sensors. Smartphone makers Huawei and Samsung are leading the adoption. Huawei’s Mate and P series, and the Samsung Galaxy A series, as well as the Vivo V15 Pro, are some of the latest smartphones with triple or more camera sensors. Other leading smartphone makers like Apple are also planning to launch phones with higher camera sensors. Phone makers are expected to launch devices with a 64MP sensor or more in the second half of 2019.

“Similar to dual camera adoption trend, the triple camera fixture initially featured in the higher-priced smartphones. However, towards the end of 2018 and early 2019, even smartphones in the affordable premium and mid-tier price bands featured three or more cameras,” said Hanish Bhatia, Senior Analyst, Devices and Ecosystem, Counterpoint Research.

“In 2020, we expect smartphones with camera resolutions of 100MP and more. Google does not even have dual cameras in its flagship Pixel phones and was relying on the stellar image quality through software. However, with the premium segment increasingly adopting dual camera sensors, Google will be under pressure to integrate this into their upcoming flagships,” Bhatia added.
