Microsoft has released a new Skype for Web update which is loaded with a number of noteworthy features. It is the biggest update for the popular video calling service in recent times. All the newly added features are aimed at improving the user experience and making it more fruitful to use the service over competitors
The biggest change included is support for HD video calling on Skype for Web. It means users will now be able to enjoy high-definition video calling directly from the web browser. This will eliminate the need for relying on the desktop client which is something not everyone likes to have installed. This new support is available for one-to-one and group calls.
The team has further expanded video call recording capability to the web version. It will work exactly the same it works on desktop and smartphone apps. A user can choose to start recording an ongoing video call anytime they want. Once the recording starts, Skype will automatically alert all the recipients that the call is getting recorded which is for privacy reasons. After the call ends, the recording will get saved to Chat for a period of 30 days. It will be available for saving to local storage during this time period after which it will be deleted. There is also an option to share the recording with others directly from the chat.
Skype for Web now has a redesigned notification panel which now works like a centralized place for all notifications. It means no matter if you have a missed video call, a mention in the group, a quotation from someone or something else, all these alerts will be shown at a single place for an easy follow up.
The search functionality has received improvements to help users find a particular message(s) within long conversations. The team has added a dedicated Gallery option for each conversation. It is basically a collection of all the media files, links, and documents shared within a particular chat. It will save users from the trouble of scrolling through the whole chat to find a specific media or link which could have been shared weeks ago.
All these new Skype for Web features have been rolled out. If you are a user of the service, you should be seeing them during the next usage.
