After tons of leaks, various teasers, and a lot of anticipation, Motorola RAZR foldable phone is finally official. It is phone with a folding design concept similar to the original RAZR V3 phone from 14 years ago. It means unlike other modern foldable phones like Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, Motorola's approach gives you a feel of folding a clamshell flip phone.
In other words, other smartphone brands want to give you a phone that can transform into a large screen tablet and vice-versa whenever you want. But in the case of Motorola RAZR, it is a standard smartphone that becomes even more compact and easier to carry around when folded. This is the reason you might see a lot of people referring to it as a foldable flip phone.
The all-new Motorola RAZR sports a 6.2-inch pOLED HD (2142 x 876 pixels) "Flex View" display with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It is a taller display that is on the inside and will be accessible to you when the phone is in the unfolded state. The outer display is a 2.7-inch gOLED panel with 600 x 800 pixels resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
It is a "Quick View" display meant to show a quick overview of information from apps so that you don't have to unfold the phone every time. It can show you time, temperature, app notifications, Google Pay transactions, send quick replies to messages/email, camera viewfinder, and even trigger Google Assistant. And as you would expect, content visible on the outer display seamlessly transfers to the inner display when you decide to unfold the device.
Motorola has focused on the hinge mechanism as well to ensure the durability of the device. It worked with Lenovo's laptop team and has come up with a mechanism that folds the phone completely. It means when in the folded state, you will not see an opening like it happens with the Galaxy Fold and that caused dust and debris to get stuck in between. It has also been designed in a way that it does not leave a crease in the center of the display.
As for other specifications, they are pretty mid-range level and relatively outdated. The Motorola RAZR features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage space. There is no microSD card support for storage expansion. It has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture and a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture.
The whole package is powered by a 2,510mAh battery with 15W TurboPower fast charging technology. It will be running Android 9 Pie out of the box but Motorola has assured an upgrade to Android 10 soon after the launch. Other features include a fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C port, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 LE, and splashproof water-resistant nano-coating.
Motorola has priced the new RAZR at $1,499 for the sole 6GB/128GB variant. It will go on pre-orders from December 26th and the launch date is set for January 9th, 2020. It is a Verizon exclusive phone in the United States and only supports eSIM functionality. It will be released in other parts of the world as well but Motorola will make an announcement as and when it will do that.
