Motorola to bring two 5G phones with "waterfall" curved display at MWC 2020

06 February 2020 0

It was late last year when Motorola first revealed plans to enter the flagship smartphone segment again in 2020. It sent out media invites for an MWC 2020 keynote last week suggesting that an official unveiling will happen at the same event. Now, XDA folks have shared a report about two unnamed Motorola smartphones that will support for 5G network and one of them is a flagship device.

The report mentions that the two phones are internally codenamed "racer" or "racer 5g" and "burton" or "racer turbo" where the latter is the flagship phone. Both these phones are expected to sport a 6.67-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) curved "waterfall" display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The term "waterfall" refers to the display panel with extreme curves that tend to stretch until the sides. It is similar to what we saw with the Vivo NEX 3 and Huawei Mate 30 Pro but the report says Motorola's curve is relatively smaller.

The flagship device "burton" will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor paired with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. The battery capacity is said to be 5,169mAh and the pre-installed operating system is Android 10. It might be released under the commercial name Motorola One 2020 or Motorola Edge+ but nothing is confirmed yet.

As for the upper mid-range "racer" device, there will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 processor with 6GB of RAM. The internal storage will be 128GB and it will offer a 48-megapixel primary camera sensor. Other reported features include 4,660mAh battery, Android 10 OS, NFC support, and at least one dual-SIM variant. It is expected to be called Motorola One 5G 2020.

Both of these new smartphones are reported to arrive with at least three new pre-installed Motorola apps. Moto Edge Assistant is an app meant for customizing how to use the curved edge area. It can be used for minimizing unintentional actions or setting up double-tap gestures for quick actions. Next up, Motorola Gametime is an app to improve the mobile gaming experience by allowing users to set up to two apps for quick access, block notifications/incoming calls, and lock the brightness level.

Lastly, Moto Audio is an app that will adjust the audio profile depending on the content. It features various preset audio profiles as well as will allow users to create custom audio profiles. The report does not offer any details about the pricing of these new Motorola smartphones.
