Qualcomm has announced its newest mid-range processor Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform which is an improved version of the Snapdragon 670 released only two months ago. As we have seen the trend with Qualcomm chips in recent times, this new one also brings a few of the high-end processor features to the mid-range segment. With this new offering, the company is claiming to deliver even better gaming, artificial intelligence (AI), and camera performance.
The all-new Snapdragon 670 Mobile Platform is built on the 11nm manufacturing process with a total of eight cores. It has two performance cores Cortex-A73 clocked at 2.0GHz and six power efficiency cores Corte-A55 clocked at 1.78GHz. The primary focus of this new chipset is to bring an improved gaming experience to mid-range devices. This is the reason it comes with Adreno 612 GPU which features support for OpenGL ES 3.2, Open CL 2.0, Vulkan, and DirectX 12. Qualcomm said that a number of games and gaming engines including Unity, Messiah, Unreal, and NeoX have been optimized for the chipset. It is claimed to deliver better frame rates, improved audio quality, and 90% reduced janks for an overall improved gaming experience.
In other key aspects, it comes with Hexagon 685 digital signal processor (DSP) which is the same one Qualcomm is using in Snapdragon 845, Snapdragon 710, and Snapdragon 670 processors. It is claimed to offer more than 50% higher performance while handling AI applications and tasks. Some of the AI tasks that this new processor will be able to perform include scene detection during photography, portrait relighting, face unlocking, payment security, battery life optimization, voice, and translation.
In the camera department, it features Qualcomm Spectra 200 series ISP which should help in better photos/videos even in low-light situations and in slow-motion mode. It is capable of supporting up to triple camera setups (both back and front) including wide-angle, telephoto, and super wide-angle image sensors. It is further said to be compatible with Bokeh mode shots, 3D face unlock, and "epic" selfies. For those interested in slow-mo videos, it can shoot extended version in HD quality without any limitations of one second or shorter bursts.
Other features include Snapdragon X12 modem for downlink speed support up to 600Mbps and 3x carrier aggregation. It is compatible with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 4+ fast charging technology which can charge a phone from 0 to 50% within 15 minutes. It also has support for Qualcomm's audio technologies called aptX and Aqstic.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 Mobile Platform is available starting today for device makers but is expected to make its way to consumer electronics devices in the market by Q1 2019.
