After tons of rumors and speculations, Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Mi MIX 3 smartphone at an event held in Beijing, China. It is the latest bezel-less smartphone from the company in the series which started off with the original Mi MIX as an innovation experiment thing. This new offering is a successor to last year's Mi MIX 2 and Mi MIX 2S.
During the launch event, Xiaomi primarily focused on the "ultimate full-screen display" and "ultimate photography" aspects of the smartphone. The Mi MIX 3 sports a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) OLED display with a 93.4% screen-to-body ratio. In comparison to the Mi MIX 2, the team reduced the chin size by 4.46mm which is claimed to have resulted in a screen-to-body ratio increase of 3.82%.
In order to offer a complete full-screen experience without any notch, Xiaomi has opted for a magnetic slider design. It makes use of neodymium permanent magnets which offer magnetic force to make the slider work. This allows the selfie camera module to stay hidden until and unless the user wants to use it. This is a similar yet different approach than Vivo NEX and Oppo Find X's motorized pop-up camera mechanism. It is claimed to be "more reliable and functional" which is something that will surely be tested in real-world situations. The slider function also comes with five preset sound effects which will play whenever you will make use of the slider. These feature Intellect, Hi-tech, Mechanics, Lighter, and Warrior.
Xiaomi's launch presentation slides suggest that the slider function can also be used for different purposes other than accessing the selfie camera. It includes picking up calls, accessing shortcuts drawer, and instantly access any of the installed apps on the phone. The exact working of these extra functions is currently unknown but we will be updating you as more details will appear.
In the camera department, Xiaomi has loaded the Mi MIX 3 with dual cameras on both the back and front panels. It has a dual 12-megapixel camera module on the back. The primary lens is a Sony IMX363 wide-angle sensor with f/1.8 aperture and Dual Pixel autofocus. The secondary one is a Samsung S5K3M3+ telephoto sensor with f/2.0 aperture. There is also support for optical zoom, OIS, portrait shots, and AI scene detection.
On the front, it has a 24-megapixel and a 2-megapixel dual selfie camera setup where the primary one is a Sony IMX576 sensor and supports selfie-light. The secondary sensor is for the depth of field effect so that one can take selfie portraits as well. During the event, Xiaomi did boast about DxOMark score of 103 which consist of 108 for photography and 93 for videos.
In other specs, the Mi MIX 3 comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with up to 10GB of RAM. It should be noted that 10GB RAM is available only with the special edition called The Palace Museum Edition. For standard variants, you will get 6GB or 8GB of RAM depending on the configuration. There are no words on the battery capacity yet but it will be coming with a 10W wireless charger bundled with the box. There will also be a Mi MIX 3 5G variant which is expected to arrive in Q1 2019.
