Sharp Aquos R2 Compact official as world's first dual notch smartphone

15 November 2018 3

In the past one year or so, we have seen more and more smartphones launching with notch display. Even though people are divided regarding the use of the notched design, smartphone companies have continued with offering them. And now, Sharp has taken this to another level by releasing a smartphone with double notch design.

It is the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact which is being touted as the world's first smartphone with a dual notch. It has one notch at the top like most of the modern smartphones and another one at the bottom. The second notch basically houses the front-facing fingerprint scanner as you can see from the image below.

In terms of specifications, the Sharp Aquos R2 Compact sports a 5.2-inch Full HD+ (2280 x 1080 pixels) High-Speed IGZO LCD display with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. Under the hood, it has the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. It comes with 64GB of internal storage but supports microSD card expansion up to 512GB.

There is a 23-megapixel rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and optical image stabilization. While recording videos, it makes use of electronic image stabilization. On the front, it has an 8-megapixel shooter with f/2.2 aperture. The whole package is powered by a 2500mAh battery with fast charging and it runs Android 9 Pie out of the box. Other features include facial recognition, USB Type-C port, and water/dust resistance certification.

The Sharp Aquos R2 Compact will go on sale sometime in mid-January 2019 but there are no words on the pricing yet.
