After a bunch of teasers and different speculations, Vivo has finally introduced the APEX 2019 concept smartphone at an event held in Beijing, China. It is a phone with a unibody design, no bezels, no physical buttons, and not even ports which makes it look like no other smartphone out there. It is basically a successor to last year's Vivo APEX and from first impressions, it does look like a worthy one.
Starting with the front panel, the Vivo APEX 2019 has nothing but glass everywhere. There are no bezels on any of the four sides and if you are wondering where is the selfie camera, then it should be noted that there is not any. The team decided to ditch the front camera altogether as it believes that users will pay more attention to all the innovations they have implemented in the phone. It has made use of the body sound casting technology to use the display as a speaker for phone calls. The display has a tiny hole on the bottom edge for the microphone.
It has "full-display fingerprint scanning" which is claimed to allow users to unlock the phone by tapping pretty much anywhere on the phone's display. In traditional in-display fingerprint scanners, only a preset area of the display works as a fingerprint reader. There is no exact information on how much are of APEX 2019's display works like a fingerprint but it should be way more than other phones.
Vivo has used pressure-sensitive side frames for the phone to ditch physical buttons. It means users will be able to perform actions like turning the phone on/off and managing volume by pressing on the pre-defined parts of the frame. The phone has no charging port either and if you were hoping for the conventional wireless charging, it is not supported either. Instead, there is a magnetic connector on the back panel which will allow users to charge the phone as well as transfer data.
The Vivo APEX 2019 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor with X50 5G modem for 5G connectivity. It used duplex PCB design to save about 20% extra space which allowed it to use 5G components without altering the phone's design. There is 12GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. On the back, it has dual rear cameras but Vivo did not go into any technical details of them.
Vivo said that the APEX 2019 will be showcased at MWC 2019 where we will get to know more about the device, especially about its real-world usability and feasibility. But it should be noted that this just a concept device and is highly unlikely to go on sale like traditional phones. Although, we can surely expect to see some of its features (if not all) coming to other Vivo phones down the line.
