Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone official with 5G support | MWC 2019

25 February 2019 3

Huawei's much talked about foldable smartphone has now been made official as Mate X at ongoing MWC in Barcelona. It is a direct competitor to Samsung's Galaxy Fold launched last week. In terms of design, specifications, and features, it does appear to be a worthy rival to the world's first mainstream foldable smartphone.

The Huawei Mate X features two OLED FullView display panels with a size of 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch respectively. When the device is folded, the 6.6-inch display is the primary display with 2480 x 1148 pixels and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The 6.38-inch panel is the secondary display on the back side with 2480 x 892 pixels and 25:9 aspect ratio. But in the unfolded state, both displays transform into a single 8-inch panel with 2480 x 2200 pixels and 8:7.1 aspect ratio.

As for holding the two display panels and handling the whole fold and unfold motion, Huawei has made use of Falcon Wing design. It is described as, "This unprecedented stretchable hinge is artistically crafted to dissolve into the device for a smooth and flat finish on both sides of the device. The firm and durable design ensures the screen will not over stretch while folding or bulge in unfolding." The device is claimed to have a thickness of just 11mm even when in the folded state.

Under the hood, the Huawei Mate X features HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor with Mali-G76 GPU and dedicated NPU. It also has Balong 5000 5G modem for providing 5G connectivity. It has been released in only one configuration option of 8GB RAM and 512GB internal storage. There are 40-megapixel wide-angle, 16-megapixel ultra wide-angle, and 8-megapixel telephoto sensors which work as both rear and front camera. The whole package is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with 55W Huawei SuperCharge and runs EMUI 9.1.1 based on Android 9 Pie out of the box. Other features include Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C port.

Huawei has priced the Mate X at EUR 2,299 with only one color option named Interstellar Blue. It will go on sale sometime in the middle of 2019. It will also come with a Full Protection Case which should help users avoid damages from falls to some extent.

The Huawei Mate X isn't still available. To be notified when it becomse available click here.
