ARM has announced newest CPU and GPU architecture designs named Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 respectively. Both of these bring significant improvements in performance when compared with previous generation offerings. It includes better and faster machine learning (ML) performance as well.
Starting with Cortex-A77, ARM is claiming that it is capable of delivering "advanced ML and AR/VR experiences" which is something that has started t become mainstream among modern smartphones. The instructions-per-clock (IPC) performance has been increased by 20% as compared to Cortex-A76 devices. If the comparison is done with Cortex-A55, the performance boost increases to a whopping 35 times.
On another hand, Mali-G77 GPU is based on all-new Valhall architecture which means there are noticeable improvements in the graphics performance as well. It is a 40% increment than Mali-G76 which is its predecessor graphics processor. It is not only the performance, but energy efficiency has also been improved which is claimed to be around 30%. The machine learning performance has also seen a 60% increment which should bring advancements to on-device intelligence.
Both Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU have been announced for the next generation of smartphones. It means we will be seeing them in numerous smartphones from different OEMs around the world. While on-paper improvements are undoubtedly significant, the real-world performance will have to be tested as well.
