New flagship smartphones coming these days offer a valuable feature which appears small but does a big job. Now, more and more smartphones are coming with OLED panels and this new adoption is very interesting but good things don’t come easy. While the display has many pros over LCD panels, it does bring a few issues as well and one of them is the flickering issue which now many manufacturers are combating.
Of late, many names of the devices have popped up which are coming with DC Dimming feature to combat the flickering issue. And, some manufacturers are releasing updates to address this issue. One such name is Huawei which is taking care of your sensitive eyes in case you use its latest P30 series. Huawei has released an update which not only includes the DC Dimming feature but also the much-required in-display fingerprint reader improvements.
The Huawei P30 and P30 Pro have gained a toggle in the Settings so that you can enable or disable the DC Dimming feature using just one tap. The size of the update is 400MB and it brings devices to the 9.1.0163D firmware. The update is first released to the Chinese users and currently, it’s unclear if the update will roll out globally or not.
The display flicker tends to be more pronounced at the lower brightness levels as the display emits light in waves. On the other hand, at higher brightness levels, the flicker doesn’t look obvious as the panel emits light almost continuously. So, at low-brightness levels, the display can pose eye-strain for those that are particularly sensitive to light. So, DC Dimming adjusts the DC current to dim the display. Well, while this feature seems to rectify the flicker issue, it’s not always advisable to use this feature. The display quality can suffer from this method and this is the reason the technique isn’t available on every device with OLED panels.
