The unconventional Dutch startup Fairphone has released its third-generation sustainable smartphone named Fairphone 3. It is a direct successor to the Fairphone 2 from 2015 and builds upon the same ideology. It means this new phone from the company features a modular design and is made up of materials that are eco-friendly and have been sourced ethically.
This second part of the ideology that is what makes Fairphone an unconventional startup as compared to the majority of the other smartphone makers. It focuses on using materials that are ethically sourced as well as workers indulged in the process of making the phones are not exploited. This includes making use of Fairtrade gold, conflict-free tin and tungsten, and recycled copper and cobalt among other materials. The team also wants to reduce e-waste and as a result, it is encouraging users to recycle their old phones by rewarding them for doing so.
In terms of specifications, Fairphone 3 sports a 5.65-inch Full HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB of internal storage and a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion. It has a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.8 aperture and an 8-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture.
It comes with a 3,000mAh battery supported by Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. It also has a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a fingerprint scanner. It will be running Android 9 Pie out of the box. It boasts a total of seven modular components including the likes of display and battery. These components can be replaced easily if get damaged and thus saving you from the trouble of replacing the whole phone.
The Fairphone 3 is priced at EUR 450 i.e. about $499 for the single configuration variant it has been announced in. It is currently available for preorders with shipping starting September 3rd. There is no doubt that you can find better-specced phones for the asking price but if you are concerned about the modularity concept, sustainability, ethical material outsourcing, and recycling, then this is the phone you can surely have a look at.
