UPDATE (January 15th, 2020):
Ni Fei, CEO of Nubia, has shared a screenshot on Weibo that confirms 144Hz display panel for the next Nubia Red Magic 5G gaming smartphone. The screenshot shows a display refresh adjustment setting where a user can choose from 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz. This will allow users to go for a lower refresh rate when not needed or whenever they would want to reduce battery consumption.
Other than this, Nubia has also posted an official teaser of the smartphone revealing a 144Hz display refresh rate. It will be the highest refresh rate smartphone from the brand and only one of the few phones in the market.

Nubia’s announcement to launch its first 5G gaming phone in the Red Magic series is something we are hearing at the beginning of the year 2020.
Nubia has confirmed the arrival of its 5G-ready gaming phone on Weibo with the help of a poster. However, it hasn’t confirmed the exact date of the launch. But the poster does reveal that the Red Magic smartphone will be fueled by Snapdragon 865 processor and X55 5G modem for 5G connectivity. The phone will arrive with support for Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) 5G networks in the home market. Apart from these, the poster reveals nothing else. But we look forward to hearing more about the device from the company itself.
At this stage, we can only make some guesses, including its name which could be Red Magic 4. But Chinese manufacturers usually skip naming their devices with numeral 4. So, it is possible Nubia end up calling this device Red Magic 5 or simply Red Magic 5G as a start of a new 5G smartphone series. We can’t make assumptions on its specifications on the device in question but considering it is going to be powered the Snapdragon 865 processor, certain points can be asserted.
The Snapdragon 865 SoC that the company announced earlier in December last year at its Tech Summit has 5th-gen Qualcomm AI engine. It is said to offer a 25% faster performance and better power efficiency than the last-generation processor. So, expect the power from the purported Red Magic 5G phone. Also, the Adreno 650 GPU claims to be 20% more powerful at handling graphics-intensive apps. So, being a gaming phone, the Red Magic 5G is going to churn out the maximum potential of the SoC.
The year 2020 is going to be the year of foldable phones, 5G phones, and new technologies. We can’t wait to see how the leading manufacturers are going to take advantage of the growing tech.
