MediaTek launches Helio G70 and Helio G70T SoCs for budget gaming phones

14 January 2020 0

MediaTek has now announced new SoCs to bring the mobile gaming experience even to the low-budget or the affordable smartphones. These are the new Helio G70 and Helio G70T SoCs and compared to the Helio G90 and G90T SoCs, they offer a little lower hardware capabilities so that the smartphone manufacturers could maintain the price to quality trade-off.

MediaTek has trimmed down a few things here and there and this is reflected in the lower number in its name. Compared to the G90T’s big cores Cortex-A76, there are Cortex-75 and they are clocked up to 2.0GHz. The smaller Cortex-A55 cores remain the same, and they are underclocked to 1.7GHz instead of the 2.0GHz clock in the Helio G90T. The octa-core setup remains identical, this means the underclocked cores form the main differences.

MediaTek hasn’t mentioned but it is likely that the Helio G70T is manufactured on the same 12nm FinFET process. It comes with support for up to 8GB LPDDR4X memory. The graphics are handled by the Arm Mali-G52 class graphics processor that operates up to 820MHz. The SoC brings in fast AI performance which forms an ideal setup for the AI-camera tasks such as the Google Lens, Smart Photo Album, scene detection, and segmentation with background removal, and Bokeh-shot enhancements.

The new chipsets from MediaTek also feature HyperEngine technology to enhance the gaming experience. The Helio G70T also features support for up to 48MP cameras and 1080p displays. The new SoC doesn’t feature 5G support, because they will still come under the G90 processor which themselves don’t feature this support. Also, the 5G support is currently limited to MediaTek’s Dimensity chipsets right now.

It is expected that the MediaTek Helio G70 and G70T will offer similar performance to the Qualcomm’s gaming SoC for low-end phones – Snapdragon 600 series or the Snapdragon 710 series.
