18 July 2018 4

Social media giant Twitter has been taking strict action lately without compromising on malicious or suspicious accounts and news in the wake of the Russian disinformation efforts in 2016 U.S elections. Twitter suspended at least 58 million user accounts in the last three months of 2017 which clearly shows how serious the company is in this regard.

Just last week, Twitter confirmed that it suspended 70 million user accounts in May and June period. Many as speculating that this severe action would effect Twitter’s user growth and some believe that the company should have warned the investors in this regard.

A lot of the accounts that were suspended during the aforementioned period were originated from Twitter’s ‘firehose’ which is a data stream that the company lets academics, companies and other ends that pay for it. The huge amount of accounts suspension clearly shows that Twitter is serious about the quality of data and information on its platform and fake accounts, bots or disinformation providers won’t be sustained for long on the platform.

The suspension of the accounts rose in the last quarter of 2017 where the company suspended 15 million accounts in just last October.

What do you think how Twitter’s growth would be impacted with such a major drill to curb misinformation and fake accounts? Share your views in the comment section below.
